Our History
Established in 2004. Still young, fresh and creative while nearing our 500th website!
It all started back in the early 2000’s when Kevin Labbe started building websites on the side just for fun. Running his business from his apartment was a challenge, but it quickly became recognized that the work delivered was well above average standards. Starting with passion and the obvious attention to detail, the apartment-based operation quickly grew into a recognized design studio.
Along the journey, we’ve had the pleasure of recruiting a list of wonderful clients who are all leaders in their own fields. As our knowledge base and experience grew, so did the quantity of our clients and the quality of our work. The first few years were an excellent learning experience, figuring out the business as well as the market. But what we’ve learned, we are now applying to our marketing strategies.
Moving into our fifth year of business, we’ve decided that our original "freelance/contracter" business name of Kevin Labbe Interactive, just wasn’t fitting the scope anymore. We’ve established ourselves as a major player in the website development market and we wanted to display that loud and clear. Changing our name to "Pixel Army" was the first step in making it clear that we are here for the long run, and we are going to make an impact. Oh and yes, we’re moved out of the apartment and into our brand new office in the heart of downtown Edmonton on Jasper Ave. Come and drop by. We’d love to meet you and discuss your business and how we can possibly help you out.
Analyzing The Identity
It goes without saying that the name "Pixel Army" was a very aggressive approach to our branding. So where did it come from? Well with a lot of research and brainstorming, we felt it resembled exactly what we are all about. We wanted a name that would say what we were looking to accomplish and stand out from our competitors. When we created a list of our competitors it was pretty obvious that everyone was using, Media, Creative, Design, Studio, etc. in their names. We wanted a name that was unique, because that’s what we deliver in our work; a unique product that is completely tailored to that specific client. Let’s look at the definition of each word:
Pixel: the smallest element of an image that can be individually processed in a video display system.
Army: a very large number or group of something.
When we put the two together, we get the technical definition of a website. A website is basically an army of pixels set out to accomplish a task; in this case, it’s making your business look unique and outstanding on the web.
Now the slogan: Strategic Website Design.
Website design goes far beyond the visual aspect of the site. There are many questions that go into the design of a website. How is the user going to navigate? How is the content going to be delivered? What do we want the end user to do while on the site? When designing a website it’s important to look at the the architecture and site flow and make sure that the website is well designed in all aspects. If we were building a house, we would want to make sure that in addition to having great curb appeal, it’s important that the layout of the floorplan is well designed as well as the plumbing, electrical and heating systems. At Pixel Army, we design all aspects of your website, from content management systems, to newsletter systems, navigation, and yes of course, the visual aspect that will capture the users attention.
